Ways to use the cards along side exam papers

The Exam Helper
(1 pack of cards per person)

Using your exam cards to help you with questions on past papers is a great way to show you can use your skills to answer exam style problems.

Revision Duel (One pack of Cards)

In this fun revision game, you both choose how many questions you think you can answer correctly  from the same card with the highest 100% correct total winning a point.

INSTRUCTIONS: Use the cards when completing past papers for revision. You may not need them for every question, but if you come across a problem you are not sure about they are there to help. Work out what mathematical topics are involved in the question you need help with and find the relevant cards using the contents on the box. Read the card, maybe try a few practice questions and then go back to the exam paper to see if you can now answer the question you were stuck on.

INSTRUCTIONS: Choose a few of the cards to focus on for the game. A 5 card game will probably take you about an hour or so depending on how fast you work. You both look at the card and secretly write down how many of the practice questions you think you can answer (your bid). Reveal how many questions you each said and try and answer them on paper, ideally showing any necessary working out. Check your answers at www.helpyourkidsmaths.com/answers and see how many each of you got right.

Start with the person who had the highest bid. If they got all the questions they said they would correct and NONE wrong at all, then they win the round. If they failed this, then it moves to the player with the next highest bid. If they got all of their questions correct and NONE wrong then they win the round. Repeat the process until you find someone who has gotten all their questions correct. If all players got a question wrong then no one wins the round.

Move onto a new card for the next round.

Red, Amber, Green - Topic Evaluation
(1 pack of cards per person)

The cards can be used to identify topics in exam that you are secure with or may need to do some extra work on. This is a great way to help plan any further revision you may need or even identify areas that you may need to get extra help with.

INSTRUCTIONS: Go through a past paper, completing the questions as you normally would. Mark any questions you can complete without any help, with GREEN. Try and use the revision cards to help you answer any questions you were not too sure on. Mark these with AMBER. Mark the questions you could not answer at all with RED. Work out how many GREEN and AMBER marks you got.

For example if (out of 80 you got 31 green marks, 16 amber marks and the rest red then you got a total of 47, which is more than likely a Grade 4. Focus on the cards you used to help you with the amber questions. If you can learn these for your real exam, then you should be looking at a grade 4.

You should also look at the red topics and decided whether you want to get some help from a teacher to improve in these, or maybe you just have not covered them in class yet.

Memory Pairs
(1 pack of cards needed)

A perfect game for 2-4 players where you search for pairs of cards and answer a pair of questions to bank the points!

INSTRUCTIONS: Mix all (or some of) the cards face down on a table and spread them out. Turn two cards over one at a time. If the number on the two cards does not match then turn the cards back over and replace them. Play passes to the next player.
If you do get two cards with the same number (Eg the
6, and the 6) then you need to answer 1 practice question from each card. If you get both questions correct then you get to keep the cards and have another go.
If you do not get it correct, the next player can attempt to answer the same questions to try and win the cards. Keep going until all the cards are gone and then count up to see who has won.
NOTE: to play this game with less cards than the full deck, make sure you choose 2 or 4 of each number that you want to include.

DIFFICULTY INCREASE: To make the game more challenging, have the next player choose one of the questions you need to answer if you get a pair. Assuming they want to win themselves, they will probably pick you a more challenging problem to solve.

Pass it On (At least one pack per table of pupils, but better with one pack per pair)

This is a great warm up activity that you can limit to certain topics by identifying the number/suit of the cards that are allowed to be chosen

INSTRUCTIONS: Work out what cards you want to focus on and tell each player/pair/table to find these cards and get them out of the deck (Eg. 5, 8, 6, J). Nominated one of students to answer a practice question one of the cards. They try and answer this and so do the other teams. If this is answered successfully they can then pass it on to another table, by saying a different card they need to answer a question from. If it is answered incorrectly then all the other teams can 'steal' the points by showing that they have answered it correctly.

Scoring
The nominated person answers the question correctly: 2 points
You 'steal' and answer the question correctly: 1 point
